Alton Towers Resort is currently the UK’s largest theme park, packed full of rides and attractions for all the family. Everybody loves a good ‘reveal’, so here are our top 5 ride and attraction reveal moments, from around the resort, that will give you goosebumps (the good kind!).
1. X-Sector
Opening in 1998 with the debut of Oblivion, X-Sector is a secretive, sinister facility where top-secret testing and experimentation takes place. Walking down the slope to the right of the Alton Towers ruins, you will see twisted black coaster track towering over the grey entrance archway. As you walk under the ‘X-Sector’ sign, you are instantly met with the industrial, mechanical soundtrack and ominously positive “ha ha ha” tune of The Smiler.
The first awesome reveal in X-Sector is the black track from the entrance expanding into the enormous tangled mess of track that is The Smiler. Two trains race around both halves of the coaster in counterpoint, diving over, around and under the iconic Marmaliser feature.
But the story doesn’t end there (…too soon?). Venturing deeper into X-Sector, our favourite reveal of this area is seeing the sheer vertical drop of Oblivion appearing from around the restaurant in the centre. You suddenly notice the huge drop looming over the area and wonder “where does it go?” The answer? Deep underground. The intimidation begins long before the ride. The classic 1990s drum and bass score pulses through the air, while the drop seems to grow in height as you approach the queue entrance, punctuated by the screams of riders suspended over the dark abyss below.
2. Wicker Man
Located behind the Mutiny Bay Courtyard, between the Haunted Hollow and Katanga Canyon walkways, the Wicker Man rollercoaster opened in 2018 and became an instant Alton Towers classic.
Now for the reveal! Approaching the ride area, the rattling roar of the wooden coaster grows louder from behind the trees. Turning the corner, the giant wooden Wicker Man figure comes into sight, with a coaster train hurtling through the centre and fire blasting from its shoulders. The eerie music echoes all around – combine this with the screams of riders and you’ve got a truly atmospheric ride!
The soundtrack develops in each section of the queueline, becoming louder and more tense as you get nearer to the station. After the bag drop, you move forward into the pre-show room. First time riders will be impressed by the incredible build-up provided by the pre-show, preparing you for boarding the coaster train in the next room – another brilliant reveal moment from the same ride!
3. The Gardens
It’s not just about the rides at Theme Park Utopia! A huge part of the magic of Alton Towers is the stunning natural environment accompanying the early 19th Century-built Alton Towers stately home.
The reveal we’re focusing on here is visible when walking on the left hand side of the central lake, past the Towers lawns. Heading to the back of the park, towards the Dark Forest, there is a short ‘bridge-like’ section where, if you look to the left, you will see a vast expanse of trees. It is not until you notice the tiny Skyride cable cars in the distance that you realise just how big this theme park is!
If you haven’t before, you absolutely MUST dedicate some of your park time to walk down into the Gardens; it feels like you are not even in the same park! The calm, quiet tranquility of the gardens, the beautiful range of plants, flowers and trees, and the historical buildings and structures within make this an adventure in itself. A special shout out goes to the grand Conservatory near the entrance of the Gardens and the impressive Pagoda Fountain much deeper into this ancient woodland.
*Be aware that the Gardens may be difficult to access in parts, with some sloping natural environments, steep steps and historical areas that can be quite narrow and slippery from disuse.
4. Hex: The Legend of the Towers
Bridging the gap between the theme park lands and historical surroundings the grand, yet unassuming entrance to Hex looks like it is just another part of the Towers ruins. This popular attraction opened in 2000 and really pushed the boundaries of themed entertainment at Alton Towers.
As you enter the original Towers building, the restoration work theme becomes far more interesting than it sounds! A deep voice in a dark room explains a short history about the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury, before you move deeper into the Towers ruins. You are met with a screen showing the local legend (yes – it’s based on a real legend from the surrounding area!), setting the tone for what is to come next. Featuring one of the most incredible ride soundtracks ever, the experience of Hex truly delivers with the chilling, yet magical tone. The plot thickens with the witch appearing in the octagon and chanting, before you head into the main vault, where the supernatural wonder comes to life and turns your world upside down. The final room does feature a ride experience, though don’t expect a blockbuster thrill ride; this is more of a mystical moving show!
Each new room that you enter throughout this attraction is one grand reveal after the other, with each becoming progressively more impressive, realistic and atmospheric than the last. A worthy experience for the whole family on our list of best reveals!
5. Forbidden Valley
The year was 1994. Thunder Valley – home to the beloved Thunder Looper rollercoaster – changed its name with the opening of Alton Towers’ latest thrill machine: Nemesis.
Fast forward over 30 years and we have seen many rides leave the park’s lineup: Thunder Looper, Ripsaw, The Blade, Dynamo (and, er, ‘Funk ‘N’ Fly’)… Even the original Nemesis has been (mostly) replaced with a newer version of itself. But let’s be real for a moment – Forbidden Valley hasn’t felt this ‘alive’ since Galactica first opened as Air in 2002!
Walking into the isolated area from beyond The Curse at Alton Manor (we’ll talk about that another time), the top secret military compound theme becomes apparent immediately. The reveal of this area from the woodland pathways is fantastic, with military vehicles, weaponry and even a helicopter framing this almost dystopian world. Moving further into the fictional Phalanx facility, the land becomes even more dynamic with the current three thrill rides operating together.
The 2024 and 2025 seasons brought a much needed refresh to the area, though still maintaining the nostalgia from before. Nemesis: Reborn looks incredible. The area theming, shopping, dining and entertainment buildings have been upgraded. Nemesis: Sub Terra has been (re)opened, and we’ve gained the incredible new suspended Top Spin – Toxicator. Sure, it might be Ripsaw 2.0 at heart, but that’s really all we wanted in the first place!
There’s only one thing now that will make the area better… **looks over to Galactica**.
